How strong is the encryption?
We use 128-bit AES — the same standard used by banks and government agencies. Brute forcing a strong password would take longer than the age of the universe.
Can I remove the password later?
Yes. Use our Unlock PDF tool with the correct password to strip the encryption.
What if I forget the password?
There is no back door. Choose a memorable password or store it in a password manager.
Is the same password used for owner and user?
Yes for simplicity — you can extend to separate owner/user passwords in a desktop tool if you need permission-based restrictions.
Do you know my password?
No. The password is used only to encrypt your file and is never logged, stored or transmitted anywhere else.
Pro tips for Protect PDF
- Use a passphrase (four random words) instead of a short password — much easier to remember and much harder to crack.
- Share the password via a different channel (SMS) than the PDF itself (email) for real security.
